What is a Release Liner?

A release liner is the thin strip of material pulled away from the adhesive side of a product enabling the adhesive on the product to be exposed and adhered to a surface for installation. A release liner is a strip of material coated on one or both sides with a releasing agent used for nearly all products utilizing a mastic or adhesive coating such as tapes or labels.

How is a Release Liner Made?

Release liners are typically made of either a paper or film core with a silicone substrate layer that releases easily from self adhesive products. Release liners are available in different variations based on the application they are required for. Paper release liners are typically made from specialty paper but can utilize a poly or clay coating whereas filmic release liners make use of different filmic resins which can be mixed to alter the density of the release liner.

What is a Release Liner Used For?

The applications are nearly endless for a release liner. Anything that is a self adhesive product can utilize one of our configurations of release liners. Any industry that makes use of self adhesive materials will generally require a release liner of some form prior to application. Most often release liners are found on tapes or labels, however the manufacturing process of release liners is highly customizable to meet the requirements of an application. The type of release liner used will depend heavily on the strength of the adhesive and the conditions the release liner will have to protect the adhesive from prior to application. Some conditions considered for the release liner are weather, temperature, moisture, and flexibility while being stored and transported.

Typical Release Liner uses include:
  • Labels/Tapes
  • Envelopes
  • Construction/Roofing
  • Graphic Arts
  • Medical/Hygiene
  • Aviation
  • Electronics
  • Gas/Moisture Sealing
A Release liner can be manufactured to be highly durable, weather resistant, temperature resistant and tear resistant based on the needs of the client. Indoor and outdoor application and storage can effect which release liner is most appropriate for your self adhesive product and should be considered when choosing a release liner.
